In the field of Applied Linguistics, the acquisition of languages has
become the object of study of numerous investigations. In fact, a great
number of works have focused on the acquisition of foreign and second
languages. In this area of study, individual differences are considered
essential in order to explain to what extent the acquisition of a specific
language can vary depending on the learner’s individual characteristics.
This paper attempts to describe the most salient individual factors that affect
language acquisition. Likewise, a special emphasis is placed on motivation
due to its relevance in second language acquisition. This project describes
the different phases regarding the study of motivation during several years,
the components that affect learners’ motivation, as well as some motivational
strategies employed by teachers to motivate students. However, the principal
aim of this paper is to offer an explanation of self-motivation, which is
related to language learning success. Thus, the most relevant self-motivation
strategies are presented, as well as a programme to train them. A teaching
proposal is also suggested in order to help students to raise their awareness
in the different self-motivation strategies. Moreover, this proposal is intended
for promoting the use of these strategies, which will assist students in their
foreign language acquisition. [-]
