Treball final de Màster Universitari en Rehabilitació Psicosocial en Salut Mental Comunitària. Codi: SAX013.
At present, the need to provide the prison population with appropriate psychiatric and mental healthcare, especially those inmates subjected to a certain range of security measures and other practices linked to their confinement, has proved to be a first-order concern for epidemiological, clinical, ethical, social and conceptual reasons. According to different sources, between 5 and 8% of those people remanded in custody suffer severe and / or chronic mental disorders. The consequences that can be drawn from a situation where individuals are immersed in a process of adapting to a closed and restricted system -studied and branded by Donald Clemmer as the process of ‘prisonization’- will be more or less negative depending on the length of the sentence, the principles guiding the management of that penal institution (with special relevance to the sort of activities carried out in it), the life history of that specific person and the social background to which they belonged prior to their incarceration. Therefore, this review aims to identify the prisoner’s psychosocial condition in that specific environment and to measure the effectiveness of all those techniques undertaken by occupational therapists dealing with inmates presenting mental health issues. When it comes to gathering data, searching has focused on databases such as MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, SciELO and Dialnet, as well as Chile-based Occupational Therapy digital magazine, the Spanish Magazine of Penal Healthcare, and the Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry’s 2003 book on how to face challenges concerning the prison population’s mental health.ca_CA
