If metaphors can be seen as the perpetual chain that embraces words and meaning, a
political speech combines the innate power of language as a means for a calculated
purpose. A substantial amount of academic publications have emphasized the role of
metaphors in conveying (sometimes hidden) ideological contents and yielding powerful
persuasive effects. (Goatly, 2011; Mussolf, 2012; Lakoff, 2014). This paper attempts to
demonstrate that metaphors are not mere combinations of lexicons but that the use of
rhetoric can contribute to the influence of persuasion in political discourse (CharterisBlack,
2004, 2005). For this aim, the metaphors included in two sets of speeches
emitted by George W. Bush and Barack Obama between 2006 and 2015 have been
analyzed through MIP (Pragglejaz, 2007) in order to highlight the importance of the use
of these devices in the use of rhetoric. This research will also emphasize the presence of
a series of discursive functions that resulted crucial for the discussion, as this study
focuses on the use of specific topics epitomized in both sets of speeches, differing only
in the intended message and expected audience. Hence, the target for this investigation
is to offer an outlook on the act of political speech, evaluating the communicative
factors, linguistic choices or manipulation attempts and the influence of such in the
nature of discourse, with a special focus on the relevance of metaphors. Words are too
powerful to create a random set of combinations. In some cases, as in political
discourse, words can be organized in selected sets for a specific meaning, as to
convince, reflect empathy, announce conflict, fight terror, etc. As it will be presented in
the results, the use of metaphorical expressions differ only in the intention of the
speaker through the persuasive setting in which the influence of discursive functions
create a new world for manipulation. [-]
