Género y ciencia avanzada: análisis bibliométrico de la revista Nature desde una perspectiva de género

Abstract

A pesar de la evidencia científica de las últimas décadas, la representación de la mujer en la ciencia sigue siendo escasa en proporción a los hombres. Este estudio pretende realizar un análisis bibliométrico sobre la existencia o no de disparidad de género en la ciencia avanzada. Para ello, se han analizado los trabajos científicos (artículos y revisiones) publicados en una de las revistas científicas con mayor impacto mundial, Nature, durante los años 2009-2010, con la finalidad de analizar cuantitativamente la participación y producción científica de hombres y mujeres, desde una perspectiva de género. En primer lugar, se recogieron las firmas de los autores/as que publicaron durante 2009-2010 mediante la base de datos Web of Science (WoS) y se almacenaron en el programa Microsoft Excel. En segundo lugar, se contrastó cada nombre con la base de datos GenderChecker, que clasifica los nombres como femenino, masculino y unisex. Se agruparon los nombres unisex y los "not available" (N/A) como género desconocido, bien porque aparecen con iniciales, o bien por ser nombres que no aparecen en la base de datos de GenderChecker. Finalmente, tras los filtros aplicados, se trabajó con un total de 12.366 firmas de género conocido de un total de 19.015. Los resultados muestran que la brecha de género persiste de forma importante en la producción científica de Nature ya que sólo un 28,1% de las firmas corresponden a mujeres y un 71,9% a hombres. También, se han analizado, desde una perspectiva de género, el impacto científico, a través de las citas recibidas, la producción, el número de autores/as y de coautores/ as, y la posición que los autores/as ocupan en el orden de las firmas publicadas.

Despite the scientific evidence of the last decades, the presence of women in science is still low in proportion to men. The aim of this study was to perform a bibliometric analysis on the existence or not of gender disparity in the advanced science. In order to do this, we have analyzed the scientific work (articles and reviews) of one of the scientific journal with the greatest global impact, Nature, the years 2009-2010, with the purpose of quantitatively analyze the participation and scientific production of men and women, from a gender perspective. Firstly, we collected the number of authorships they published during 2009-2010 through the database Web of Science (WoS) and stored it in the Microsoft Excel program. Secondly, it contrasted each name with the database GenderChecker, which classifies the names as female, male and unisex. Unisex and the "not available" (N/A) names were grouped as unknown genre, either because they appear with initials, or because the names do not appear in the database of GenderChecker. Finally, after applying the filters, we worked with a total of 12.366 authorships of gender known out of a total of 19.015. The results show that the gender gap persists in a significant way in the scientific production of Nature as only 28.1% of authorships correspond to women and 71.9% to men. Also, it has been analyzed from a gender perspective, the scientific impact, through the appointments of the number of citations, production, the number of authors/ace and co-authors/ace, and the order of authors published.
