La producción de seda en el País Valenciano durante el siglo XVIII: Distribución geográfica y evolución

Abstract

A través del análisis de diversas fuentes, se ha logrado disponer de una amplia información sobre la evolución de la cosecha de seda del País Valenciano durante el siglo XVIII. La tendencia descrita por la producción total es moderadamente descendente. Pero lo más significativo fueron los cambios experimentados en su distribución geográfica, sufriéndose una fuerte regresión en las comarcas productoras más importantes que solo fue levemente compensada por el incremento productivo conocido por las comarcas vecinas. Esta evolución reflejaba un cambio sustancial en el cultivo de la morera, que se fue convirtiendo cada vez más en una producción secundaria ante la mayor rentabilidad que ofrecían otras alternativas.

Through the analysis of different sources, it has been possible to obtain a wide range of information about the evolution of the silk crop of the País Valenciano (E. of Spain) during the XVIII century. The described tendency by the total production is moderately decreasing. But the most significative of all was the experience changes in its geographical distribution, which suffered a strong regression in the most important and productive areas that was only mildly offset by the increased production of the neighbouring areas. This development reflected a substantial change in the cultivation of the mulberry tree, which was becoming more and more secundary crop against the increasing rentability that was offered by other alternative products.
