Tim's Burton's Interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland: A Sequel with a New Alice

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study between Alice in Wonderland movie by Tim Burton (2010) and the books by Lewis Carroll, on which it is based A lice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and A lice Through the LookingGlass (1871). In the first place, I describe the style of the writer, which predominates in the mentioned books: the genre of nonsense; and a brief note on the Victorian period, when he lived. In parallel, a summary of Tim Burton’s mode of filming is given. Then, a definition of adaptation is provided in order to understand what Tim burton portrayed in his work. After that ,the plot of the retelling of the books that Tim Burton relates on his movie, comparing the key features and showing what they have in common. Next, there is an enumeration of the new aspects of the movie and the modifications on the original story, such as the Alice’s age, her father and the set. As a conclusion, the purpose of Tim Burton is disclosed: creating a new Alice, changed from the original. Moreover, the manner in which feminism is revealed in the story, with the Burtonesque touch all along, is explained. Finally, I will expose how I perceive the movie and the conclusions I reached.
