<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/55382</link>
<description>Alves Carrara, Angelo; Laguardia, Rafael Martins de Oliveira
This study aims at evaluating the land registry records of the mid-1850s in&#13;
Brazil as a source capable of delivering consistent elements for the analysis of the&#13;
process of occupation and use of the land, particularly regarding the natural conditions&#13;
or limitations determined by the relief and hydrography (near springs, flow, flood areas,&#13;
etc..), and other geographic variables. What is proposed here takes into account the&#13;
records of the ancient parish of Santo Antonio do Paraibuna. This initiative is part of&#13;
those efforts being consolidated over recent years, and looking to create reliable&#13;
cartographic sources based on a thorough analysis of traditional sources, mostly&#13;
consisting of cartographic data itself. Consistency of analysis obviously will increase&#13;
with the use of different sources, which can clarify important features such as post&#13;
mortem inventories, legal proceedings, deeds of sale, for example. The proposed&#13;
model was intended as an aid to historical research. Special attention is afforded to the&#13;
methodology that generated a computer program developed for the purpose of&#13;
rendering cartographic the non-cartographic information.; Este trabajo evalua si los registros del catastro de tierras de mediados de la&#13;
década de 1850 en Brasil ofrecen información adecuada para el análisis del proceso&#13;
de ocupación y uso del suelo; en particular de los condicionantes naturales y las&#13;
limitaciones determinadas por el relieve e hidrografia, entre otras variables&#13;
geográficas. Se analizan los registros de la antigua parroquia de Santo Antônio do&#13;
Paraibuna. Mediante un análisis de fuentes tradicionales, en su mayor parte&#13;
constituidas por datos no propiamente cartográficos, se pretende encontrar fuentes&#13;
cartográficas fiables; Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar os registros de terras de meados da&#13;
década de 1850 no Brasil como fonte capaz de fornecer elementos consistentes para&#13;
a análise do processo de ocupação e uso do solo, com particular atenção para os&#13;
condicionantes naturais ou as limitações determinadas pelo relevo e hidrografia&#13;
(proximidade de nascentes, fluxo, áreas de alagamentos, etc.), dentre outras variáveis&#13;
geográficas. A avaliação aqui proposta toma como base os registros da antiga&#13;
paróquia de Santo Antônio do Paraibuna. Esta iniciativa participa dos esforços que&#13;
vêm se consolidando nos últimos anos, e que buscam contar com fontes cartográficas&#13;
fiáveis baseadas em uma profunda análise de fontes tradicionais, em grande medida&#13;
constituídas por dados não propriamente cartográficos. A consistência da análise&#13;
evidentemente aumentará com o recurso a diferentes fontes suplementares que&#13;
esclareçam aspectos relevantes, tais como inventários post mortem, processos cíveis&#13;
ou escrituras de compra e venda, por exemplo. O modelo aqui proposto foi pensado&#13;
como auxiliar da pesquisa histórica. Especial atenção é dada à metodologia que gerou&#13;
um programa de computador elaborado com o propósito de reduzir as informações&#13;
não cartográficas em cartográficas

<title>Property rights in land: institutional innovations, social appropiations, and path dependence</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/43582</link>
<description>Congost, Rosa; Gelman, Jorge; Santos, Rui
This paper addresses critically, from the standpoints of social history&#13;
and sociology, dominant views on path dependence, institutions and property in&#13;
the New Institutional Economics and Law and Economics literatures, which we&#13;
find lacking in what concerns the analysis of concrete social relationships and&#13;
processes. We argue for an approach to property rights, specifically in land, that&#13;
goes beyond the perspective on property as an institution and builds on the&#13;
analytical potential of the definition of property rights as social relations, as well&#13;
as for the view of property as a bundle of rights and against the revival of the&#13;
absolute concept of property under a juridical numerus clausus of property&#13;
forms. We submit that it is at this more concrete level of social relations that we&#13;
may detect the historical sequences of events and outcomes generating path&#13;
dependence.; Este texto discute críticamente, desde el punto de vista de la&#13;
historia social y la sociología, las visiones dominantes sobre la ‘dependencia&#13;
del camino’, las instituciones y la propiedad en las literaturas de la Nueva&#13;
Economía Institucional y Derecho y Economía, visiones que hallamos&#13;
insuficientes en cuanto al análisis concreto de los procesos históricos y las&#13;
relaciones sociales. Argumentamos a favor de una aproximación a los&#13;
derechos de propiedad, específicamente de la tierra, que vaya más allá de la&#13;
perspectiva de la propiedad como una institución y se apoye en la potencia&#13;
analítica de una definición de los derechos de propiedad en tanto relaciones&#13;
sociales, así como en una visión de la propiedad como una ‘haz de derechos’&#13;
en contraposición al renacer del concepto de ‘propiedad absoluta’ bajo la&#13;
definición jurídica de un numerus clausus de formas de propiedad. Sostenemos&#13;
que es en este nivel más concreto de las relaciones sociales, en el que&#13;
podemos detectar las secuencias históricas de los acontecimientos así como&#13;

<title>Peasant households' acces to land and income diversification. The Peruvian-andean case 1998-2000</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/43461</link>
<description>Velazco, Jackeline; Pinilla, Vicente
Using data for a sample of households in six villages from the North and Central Peruvian Sierra, we investigate the role played by access to assets, land in particular, in determining farm and non-farm income sources. The empirical relationship between assets and income sources is derived from a household model.Ordinary Least Square and Tobit models were used for the empirical analysis. Evidence suggests that the relationship between land and income diversification is influenced by village specific characteristics. In general, results have demonstrated the importance of assets such as natural, physical, human and social as key determinants of rural income in Peruvian Sierra. For the particular case of this study, in which families are located in a poor region with low level of economic development, it is pertinent to assume that the push factors have a decisive influence in defining the participation of these families in rural non-farm activities. That is to say, non-farm rural activities are fundamentally activities of “refuge” that allow the family to have access to a source of an immediate and relatively secure income – being less risky than agriculture – although participating in activities of low productivity.; El documento investiga el papel desempeñado por el acceso a los activos, la tierra en particular, en la determinación de los ingresos agrícolas y no agrícolas de familias rurales del Perú.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/41581</link>
<description>Collantes, Fernando
This paper, a case study of the great transformations undergone by&#13;
food consumption patterns in Spain since c. 1950, reconstructs the evolution of&#13;
the consumption of milk and milk derivatives. The paper homogenizes and&#13;
triangulates the information given by several statistical sources, which use&#13;
different methodologies and cover different periods. This information is&#13;
combined with qualitative material. Milk consumption grew rapidly during the&#13;
first half of the period and, after a phase of stagnation, started to decrease in&#13;
the last years of the twentieth century. On the contrary, the consumption of (an&#13;
increasing variety of) milk derivatives grew steadily throughout the whole of the&#13;
period. The contrast between the respective trajectories of milk and its&#13;
derivatives underlines the relevant role played by the elaboration and&#13;
diversification of foodstuffs in the shaping of consumption patterns.; El trabajo, un estudio de caso sobre las grandes transformaciones&#13;
experimentadas por la alimentación española durante la segunda mitad del&#13;
siglo XX y comienzos del XXI, reconstruye la evolución del consumo de leche y&#13;
derivados lácteos. El trabajo homogeneiza y coteja las informaciones ofrecidas&#13;
por las diversas fuentes estadísticas que, con distintas metodologías, cubren&#13;
diferentes partes del periodo, y las combina con elementos cualitativos. El&#13;
consumo de leche creció con rapidez durante la primera mitad del periodo y,&#13;
tras una fase de estancamiento, comenzó a caer a finales del siglo XX. El&#13;
consumo de derivados lácteos, por el contrario, creció persistentemente a lo&#13;
largo de todo el periodo, apoyado sobre una variedad creciente de productos.&#13;
El contraste entre las respectivas evoluciones de la leche y sus derivados&#13;
subraya el importante papel desempeñado por la transformación y&#13;

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/35380</link>
<description>Martínez Carrión, José Miguel; Medina Albadalejo, Francisco José
This paper analyzes the international competitiveness of the Spanish wine&#13;
industry at the stage of 'wine globalization'. The comparative advantage through the&#13;
Revealed Competitive Advantage Index (RCA) or Balassa Index and the behavior of&#13;
the wines types, and the relative weight of exports in volume, value and unit prices in&#13;
the world market since the 1960's are examined. The article reports the exports&#13;
increasing of bottled quality wines with Appellations of Origen and, overall, wine&#13;
exports growth in recent decades. Spanish wine industry has become a net exporter,&#13;
challenging the fall in domestic consumption and increased foreign competition;&#13;
however, the bases of its competitiveness are low-cost wines, quality economic wines,&#13;
and particularly the bulk wines, which show higher dynamism in the last decade.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/30355</link>
<description>Llopis, Enrique; Velasco, Ángel Luis
This working paper central purpose is to study the magnitude and the evolution of mortality in the Guadalajara province between 1700 and 1865. The parish registers of baptisms and deaths in a sample of 25 local entities are the main source of data. The principal finding is the slightly downward trend in the gross mortality rate between 1750 and 1830s, only broken by a brisk surge during the first years of the XIX century. The dominant factor in the downward pattern is a pullback in adult mortality

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/29950</link>
<description>Infante Amate, Juan
Olive tree represents today the major tree concentration in Europe. Its great&#13;
expansion started at 19th Century caused by liberal agrarian reforms and, traditionally,&#13;
has been associated with agrarian modernization in Mediterranean basin due to the&#13;
growing integration of its production in domestic and foreign markets. This paper seeks&#13;
to review the causes and the origins its expansion introducing new methods derived&#13;
form environmental history and social history. We study local case studies which&#13;
historical sources allow us to profound in this subject with more detail than at&#13;
aggregate scale, starting at 1750 (when olive land was scarce) and finishing at 1930&#13;
(once consummated the firs great expansion known as “golden age”). The main&#13;
findings show the causes of the weak specialization before 19th Century; the&#13;
multifunctional character of traditional olive production; how its expansion was also&#13;
determined by ecological particularities of this crop and by its function on substitute&#13;
deficit products like woodfire or animal feed; and, finally, how small farming was behind&#13;
its expansion using olive orchards like a peasant productive strategy.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/29430</link>
<description>Moraes, María Inés; Stalla, Natalia
This paper focus on the history of River Plate’s exports of hides from 1760 to 1860, a century that ran from the beginning of the Bourbon reforms in America until the beginning of the “first globalization”. The aim of this paper is to show some basic magnitudes of this crucial commodity in the region’s history of international trade, from the early years as a staple until its maturity. Thus, this work collects from primary and secondary sources data on volume, prices and values of exported hides from Buenos Aires and Montevideo along the period. This evidence is useful to grasp how volumes, prices and values performed before and after the critical year of 1810, when the colonial ties with Spain were broken. The results underline three main facts: first, exports of hides from the Rio de la Plata grew at a high rate before 1810 due to a large increase in volumes and in spite of flat prices. Second, they experienced a much more slowly and fluctuating growth after the independence; in spite of wars and political turmoil, this time volumes exported were even greater than before while prices declined until 1850. Third, export prices of hides notably rise in 1850, and just then they acted as the driving force upon value.

<description>Lana Berasain, José Miguel
The aim of this work is to exploit the information contained in an isolated but very dense source: the cash book of the Spanish merchant Esteban Gonzalez de Linares. Moved to Caracas between 1785 and 1791 to manage the liquidation of the estate of Sebastian de Mier y Terán, a wealthy landowner in Los Llanos, Linares was actively involved in the export boom of those years, marked by the end of the monopoly of the Guipuzcoa Company and the decrees of free trade. The text quantifies the amount of cocoa, indigo, and cattle moved by this subject, and their prices.

<title>La tierra en manos del artesanado.
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10234/28909</link>
<description>Martínez Araque, Iván
Artisans in the late Middle Ages often owned an important amount of land in some European regions, despite it was not their main activity. There are constant references about it in the relatively abundant Valencian data. Nevertheless, this subject has aroused only a few detailed studies. In this article we have asked ourselves about the importance of those agrarian plots in the little workshops' domestic economies and in the social strategies of these families. To explain all those matters, we have studied some examples along the country: from the professionals of the little towns, to urban centres and also the artisans of the city of Valencia at the end of the 14th and during the 15th century.
