La utopía rural de un régimen autoritario. La política cooperativista durante la dictadura de Metaxas (Grecia, 1936-1940)
Bregianni, Catherine
General Metaxa's regime, pursuing fascist archetypes in the construction of its image and causing a repercussion of nationalistic principles on the organization of the state, attempted to centralize the agricultural economy in order to achieve a large-scale protectionism. The main axes of its agricultural policy were the protection of some agricultural products (in particular that of grains), regulation of rural debts and expansion of the Agricultural Bank's net. In spite of the fact that such axes had also been objectives of the previous liberal governments, in the conjuncture of the international economic crisis, Metaxa's dictatorship enveloped ideological principles and «theoretical" interpretations within its paternalistic politics. In fact, this regime attempted to approach the rural population by means of strategies like ceremonies, parades and a strongly populist discourse.

The spread of milk consumption was a significant change in the diet of Europeans; a fact however that has not been greatly studied with regard to populations of the Mediterranean Europe. In this article we shall analyse the main circumstances that conditioned that process in Catalonia between the mid-19th century and 1936. In our study we shall argue that the consumption of milk in this area was only relevant in the 19th century in situations of illness or old age, and that it subsequently increased acquiring a new significance as a result of various factors. In particular, we shall emphasise: (a) scientific advances in microbiology and nutrition, (b) activities carried out by doctors and various public institutions to promote fresh milk consumption, and (c) technological innovations in the milk producing sector.

This article analyses peasant conflicts from an environmental perspective. First, we show a general theory about environmental conflicts making a clear differentiation among environmental conflicts making a clear differentiation among environmental, environmentalist and green movement conflicts. This differentiation is accomplished using as criterion the goals of the actors in relation to both the agroecosystems sustainability and the types of discourses used in the protests. Second, we analyse the peasant use of agroecosystems and the differences between agricultural systems based on organic energy in contrast with those based on fossil energy. Finally, we identify several types of peasant environmental conflicts between 18th and 20th centuries: environmental peasant protests in Mediterranean Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa; conflicts produced around resources like water, common goods or against pollution, Land Reform, reactions to environmental policies or defence of indigenous territories. As these examples show, attention must be paid to the environmental dimension of the peasant protest in order to understand the conflicts, although sometimes mixed with gender and class dimensions.
