The development of atmospheric science is reviewed from its beginnings, less than a century ago. The article describes the first attempts to go beyond the simple observation of meteorological phenomena, the fundamental work developed by the Bergen school and, later by the Chicago school and discusses the problem of the sensitivity of a system of equations to small changes in the initial conditions -the fret first studied by Lorentz, which opened the way to the new theories of chaotic dynamics- as well as the big question we are confronted with in our days, namely the problem of climatic change. In relation to the climatic situation and the numerical weather forecasts, the paper ends with a brief review of the still open problems in the atmospheric sciences, which are the subject of active contemporary research.
