S’invoca el bagatge cultural clàssic, originat a l’antiga Grècia, on l’espai es entès a través de la geometria euclidiana i el temps és un paràmetre de caràcter absolut. Es fa pales corn aquests pilars del pensament son somoguts per la teoria de la relativitat en atribuir-li al temps caràcter local i descriure gravitació i inèrcia en termes d’una geometria no euclidiana que és la que, en realitat, sembla que posseeix l’espai. S’apunta una contradicció filosòfica entre teoria de la relativitat i mecànica quàntica en el paper de l’observació (o mesura), concepte clau en la construcció de cadascuna d’aquestes teories, corn la responsable del continuat fracàs en els intents de quantificar la gravitació. Finalment hi ha una breu incursió en la cosmologia amb la conjectura final que l’encara no establerta teoria de la gravitació quàntica representa la teoria final, de la que quàntica i relativitat son meres aproximacions.
The discussion starts with a reference to the classical philosophical background of physics, originated in ancient Greece, where space in understood in the frame of Euclidean geometry and time is a parameter having absolute character. It is then explained how these pillars of classical thought are shaken by Relativity Theory, firstly by attributing a local character to time, conceived as a dynamical variable, and then by describing inertia and gravitation in terms of a non-Euclidean geometry which appears to be the appropriate one for a correct description of space. A philosophical contradiction is discussed between Quantum Mechanics and Relativity, related to the role of observation -measurement as a key concept in the construction of both theories and responsible for the failures so far- of repeated attempts at developing a quantum theory of gravitation. The paper ends with a brief incursion into Cosmology, with the conjecture that Quantum Mechanics and Relativity ore but approximations of the so far still pending Quantum Theory of Gravitation.
