Introduction: The growing prevalence and the incidence of Diabetes Mellitus over the years
leads the disease to be considered a major public health problem. Its chronicity, associated
complications and directly or indirectly affectation to the patient’s life quality require a
continuous multidisciplinary approach, that considers the latest treatment modalities and
technological devices to ensure an optimal control of the disease.
Objectives: Assess the influence of the new technologies’ application in the treatment of
Diabetes Mellitus on the patient’s life quality.
Methodology: An integrative review of the literature was carried out from the articles obtained
in the different scientific databases, taking into account the established inclusion and exclusion
criteria. A bibliographical research was carried out in the following databases: PubMed,
CINAHL, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source and LILACS.
Results: A total of 624 articles were obtained in the first research, after the application of both
automatic and manual filters, 27.1% (n = 46) were rescued, of which 52.17% (n = 24) met the
inclusion criteria of the study. Of the 24 articles including 62.5% (n = 15), correspond to the
PubMed database, 29.17% (n = 7) correspond to ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source and
8.33% (n = 2) correspond to the LILACS database.
Discussion and conclusions: The use of new technologies in the management of diabetes has
associated benefits at glycemic and psychosocial level: it reduces the glycemic variability,
decreases the hypoglycemia, allows the obtaining of lower HbA1c levels and improves the
patient’s wellness in terms of relationships, safety and satisfaction. Diabetes education is
essential for both patient and professionals in charge of dealing with these users. Therefore, the
application of these devices, despite having found certain limitations related to alarms and
physical discomfort, implies advantages in terms of the reduction of complications and
improvement of life’s quality.
PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source y LILACS.
