In Michel Gondry's universe, both in his music videos and in his feature films, there is an evident surrealist presence, where dream references give new expressive and narrative strategies to each project.
This way of doing it in the beginning has extrapolated it to his first works in the cinematographic industry, in which the illogical and the representation of the mental world of the protagonists are the center of the plot, and the director proposes a coexistence with the not psychic diegesis. We talk about ¡Olvídate de mí! (Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Michel Gondry, 2004) and La ciencia del sueño (The science of sleep, Michel Gondry, 2006), in whose films -both with common aspects--, the research will focus on analyzing the similarities and differences in their respective mental treatments, that is, put the eye on the staging and understand the position of Michel Gondry as author.
Through textual analysis we can observe that the differences are more relevant than the similarities, since they attend to a series of aspects based on the external plot to the psyche and on intrinsic aspects of the protagonists.
Likewise, the coexistence of realities suggests an analysis of the enunciative marks to verify what role they play in the connection of both realities, as well as the scenography. And in which we will discover that their intervention attend to the mental state and to the narrative action of the protagonists, that are not more than an excuse to define the influence of realities and their ontological equality, justified by the transition by cutting to place them on the same narrative level.
In this way, the work is structured in the following sections: a preamble that will expose in the form of a story the topic analyzed and the conclusions drawn; the theoretical framework that will include the representative background of the dream in the cinematographic field, as well as Gondry's first dream works and the brief exposition of what has been talked about the films analyzed; the methodology that will be used for that purpose; the analysis applied to the staging, as a representation and, together with the marks in their function as a link; and finally, the results and conclusions that will tell us if the hypothesis is confirmed and if the objectives have been reached.
