The emergence of Twitter has meant a new digital space in which users are the
main characters and decide freely what topics they want to develop and how they
want to do it. Citizen participation around relevant events is becoming more
common and numerous in this platform, where users debate about political
reality.
Therefore, it is necessary to know how these new communicative actors use this
space, as well as the pretensions that make them come to the platform.
Specifically, from the case of the resignation of Esperanza Aguirre as
spokesperson of the Popular Party in the City of Madrid. Likewise, it seeks to
identify the potential of the content generated on Twitter through its reflection on
the media.
A content analysis is applied through the #AguirreDimite tag. On the other hand,
the web versions of ElPaís, ElMundo, ElConfidencial and HuffingtonPost are
studied to extract the news whose main information impulse the activity
developed in Twitter.
The data reveal a low use of the main Twitter tools: mentions, hashtags and links.
In addition, they reflect how, through humor and criticism as main trends in the
character of tweets, they banalize these issues and show their discontent with
politics.
Despite the construction of this new scene of social relation, which brings millions
of people into contact with each other, social networks are not responding to the
expectations of the creation of a dialogical space that could contribute to increase
political and social commitment.
