We understand emotional regulation as any strategy used to maintain, improve or
suppress the current affective state. The model of emotion and regulation process
proposed by Gross distinguishes between emotional regulation strategies focused in
anticipation (i.e. reevaluation) and strategies focused in the response (i.e. suppression).
Ellis cognitive ABC model postulates that, when a subject faces an activating event the
responses at the emotional level will be influenced by his believes of that event in
particular. Due to the fact that both models assume the mediating role of cognition, this
study main objective is to examine the possible relations between two evaluation tools
developed to measure their primary constructs. The sample will feature 156 adults. The
data measured include demographic information; their level of demandingness, low
frustration tolerance, awfulyzing, self-downing, other-downing, rationality and
irrationality, measured with the ABS2; and the degree of use of two regulation
strategies, reevaluation and expressive suppression, measured with the ERQ. Results
point to a significant correlation between the majority of the ERQ and ABS2 variables:
negative about reevaluation and positive about expressive suppression. The variable of
the ABS2 that produces a major impact in the reevaluation construct of the ERQ is
awfulyzing. The ABS2 variables that produce a major impact in the ERQ expressive suppression construct are demandingness and self-downing. We conclude that there is
a clear relationship between the constructs of Gross's model of emotion and regulation
process and Ellis's cognitive ABC model, which provides new evidence for the hypothesis
that there may be a causal relationship between the evaluative dimenssion (rational vs.
irrational) and emotional reactions (adaptive vs. maladaptive).
