Pathological gambling is a severe health problem that has consequences for both people who suffer from it and their families. In addition to its high prevalence, there is a high relapse rate among pathological gamblers (APA, 2013). The aim of this study is to evaluate variables involved in relapses, with special attention to the role of cognitive distortions, and to determine appropriate prevention strategies and treatment. The sample includes 12 patients diagnosed with pathological gambling who are receiving psychological therapy in at the PATIM association, located in Castellon and Valencia. The participants completed the Inventory of Situations Precipitants Relapse and Coping Strategies in Pathological Gambling, consisting of 19 items that assess different high-risk situations for relapse; the Gambling Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (GSEQ), consisting of 16 items that assess perceived self-efficacy to control gambling behavior in different situations and the Gamblers 'Beliefs Questionnaire (GBQ), consisting of 21 items that assess cognitive distortions related to gambling behavior. Participants also participated in Focus Group that provided qualitative information to understand better the enabling factors of relapses in this disorder. The main results of this study show that participants had dedicated several efforts to stop gambling behavior and, given that approximately half were experiencing withdrawal, they experienced a high level of game control self-efficacy and low cognitive distortions related to gambling behavior. However, there are situations like having a debt or money available for spending that were strong predictors for relapses as well as having a negative mood and poor time management. Therefore, we can deduce that an appropriate financial, emotional and time control could be beneficial to maintain abstinence.
