This review examined the relationship between the use of cognitive regulation strategies and emotional disorders in adolescents. To this end, a review of ten experimental studies was carried out. The results showed that all cognitive regulation strategies were used by adolescents to a lesser extent than by adults, especially positive reappraisal. Strategies more closely linked to emotional disorders in adolescence were self-blame, rumination and positive reappraisal. Thus, rumination and self-blame predicted increased emotional symptoms, while positive reappraisal decreased such symptoms. Positive reappraisal increased its effect in reducing depressive symptoms in late adolescence. Instead, rumination and self-blame predisposed to experiencing depressive symptoms in early adolescence and adulthood. However, emotional disorders did not predict subsequent changes in certain aspects of emotional dysregulation, but adolescents with elevated depressive symptoms used more expressive suppression. In conclusion, although the direction of the relationship between emotion regulation and emotional disorders is not clear, rumination and self-blame acted as risk factors, while positive reappraisal as a protective factor against the development of emotional disorders. In addition, the use of maladaptive strategies, predisposed more to the development of emotional disorders in adolescents than in adults. These results highlight the importance of prevention in adolescence and of treatments targeting emotion regulation like the Unified Protocol for adolescents with emotional problems.
