desarrollado una función en las diferentes fases del trabajo. Joana Doñate, jefa de producción;
decidimos adaptar y crear 6 estilos diferentes: MRI, Hacia atrás, Terror, Plano secuencia, 100
planos y Youtube.
colapsan nuestra retina y anulan nuestra capacidad creativa.
The current assignment consists in the elaboration of 6 cinematographic exercises in style, based
on Raymond Queneau's book Exercises in Style and in Matt Madden’s comic book 99 Ways to 3
Tell a Story: Exercises in Style . The purpose of the group’s members is to use this project as a 4
support to their portfolio and as a reference for future projects.
The assignment is integrated by a theoretical approximation, the production, the shooting and the
postproduction of the exercises chosen. During some of the phases of the shooting, and the
postproduction, we have collaborated with professionals, in order to produce the best result
achievable. Moreover, we have received financial support from Ágape for the development of the
exercises in style.
The team, that has done the current Final-Year Assignment, is formed by Joana Doñate Ventura,
Marcos Luna Hoyas, Alin Madalin Ionesco and Sheila Sánchez Rosado, under the advising of Dr.
Roberto Arnau Roselló. According to our flairs, we have developed different functions in the
different stages of the project. Joana Doñate as line producer, Alin Ionescu as director of
photography, Marcos Luna as director, and Sheila Sanchez as production manager.
With the elaboration of this exercises in style we are not only trying to reflect all the knowledge
acquired during the four years of the degree, our intention is to see other Final-Year Assigments
adding new exercises, until the 99 are done, thus completing the adaptation of Quenau’s work.
The choice of the exercises in style was made based on our abilities and strengths. We decided to
adapt and create six different styles: CHC, Backwards, Horro, Sequence Shot, 100 Shots and
Youtube.
As we have said, in order to elaborate this styles, we have had to unify knowledge and look for
collaborations that may provide help in our weakest points , such as the proper use of a steadycam
and the composition of a original sound track for the Horror exercise.
Nowadays we live surrounded by images, still or moving, that collapse our retinas and disable our
creativity. This work intention is, precisely, to explore content and shape, acknowledge the rules, to
adapt ourselves to them, or modify and break them if necessary.
We are not trying to innovate cinematographically, we are trying to show the different meanings
and probabilities that we have adopting a style or a particular set of codes, through the film
adaption of the cited books.
Many times, when we have an idea, and we have to transform it into a script, we only think it in the
most conventional and normative way. This exercises are trying, in a sense, to break with this
creative rigidity, and take the audiovisual world to new ways through lateral thinking and
incoherence. Creating trascendental contents is not the purpose, speaking about plots, conversely
we want to show the paths that the simplest of the ideas can take.
As we will discuss next, in order to develop each of the exercises, a deep investigation has been
necessary to know the performance and the visual possibilities of adaptation. We have done an
approximation to the audiovisual traits that must be in the creative process, to then deepen in them
in the different exercises in style. In the same way the most technical part will work, with the
sections divided by styles of the screenplay and shooting script , and the adaption to those of the
preproduction and postproduction.
The final goal of the team’s members is , as we have said, to acquire new knowledge and give the
opportunity to future students to take the baton creating more exercises in style, until its
completion.
