The increasing social demand of information about health and medicine has met
reflected with an increase of pieces with sanitary contents in the Spanish press. The
aim of this investigation is to analyze health coverage exercised by El Mundo, El País
and La Vanguardia newspapers from 2004 to 2014. This is an observational,
comparative and longitudinal research that responds to the methodology of content
analysis. The results show a very similar assiduously publication in the three
newspapers. There is a common tendency towards the publication of large parts above
the ¾ page, generically, are located in the Society section. The most repeated theme is
the scientific medical outreach and employee genre is the news item. The three
newspapers choose, in general, a standard lexicon and the inclusion of visual aids in
over half of the pieces, photography being the most used. As for the sources of
information, most of the pieces are polyphonic and expert sources cede leadership to
the official. With the discussion of the results obtained it shows that the health
journalism is far from journalism reference. Although there is a lot of information society
remains uninformed on health issues, this can be an opportunity.
