Based on the Tirant to Blanc novel, the autor puts in relation the character rei Escariano with the black giant of the Valencian popular tradition. This giant is the guardian of enchanted princesses and treasures. Taking into account the common features of both characters, the author hypothesizes that Joan Martorell followed the legend or popular taIes in order lo create his character: At the same lime, the author mentions a place which allows us to associate, to a certain extent, the African Tirant’s adventures to Joan Martorell rather than to Martí Joan de Galba.
