Introduction: The hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is at the moment one of the most
frequently used therapeutical methods in the treatment of onco-hematological diseases. Oral
mucositis is the one of the most frequent complications which specially affects these patients
quality of life. The aim of this revision is to analyze existing interventions for its prevention
and treatment.
Methodology: A bibliographic revision was made about the different, available options for the
prevention and treatment of the oral mucositis associated with hematopoietic stem cell
transplantations, through searching strategy based on health science descriptors (DeCS) and
medical subject headings (MeSH), taking into account a rage of inclusion and exclusion
criteria for the selection of the studies.
Results: 28 documents which carried out the selection criteria established were selected and
studied. The following interventions were identified in them: growing factors, oral cares,
rinses, criotherapy and light therapy; as well as the association among several of them.
Conclusion: Despite the great variety of existing measures for the prevention and treatment of
the oral mucositis, contradictory information and lack of evidence still exist. That’s why the
need of more studies to be able to create a unified protocol of the oral mucositis use in
patients undergoing a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is put forward, and in this way
its impact and seriousness can be reduced.
