Literature has experienced considerable advances over 19th and 21st centuries. There
are many aspects which characterize each period; one of them is the expression of
emotions, which has been gradually altered among both stages. In order to observe the
changes, in this paper we provide an analysis of Wuthering Heights, an 18th century
novel and Forbidden, a current book. To reach these results, verbs, adverbs and
adjectives have been taken from the novels alongside short extracts that show the
exaggeration use, their type of text and the synonyms employed to express their
emotions. A comparison of the results has been made and both novels seem to have
different but also similar aspects in common when revealing their feelings. While
Wuthering Heights seems to be a more expressive and dramatic novel, Forbidden stands
for a more realistic way to show emotions.
